/ 14 / 傳教士 施美夫1815-1871文 / 陳睿文施 美 夫 主 教（Bishop George Smith），1815年6月19日生於英格蘭森麻實郡的惠靈頓（Wellington, Somerset, England）。1837年畢業於牛津大學古典文學專業，1840年按牧。1施美夫「對福傳的熱忱、英俊的外表及顯然的和藹可親的態度使其成為英國海外傳 道 會（Church Missionary Society）理 想 的 人 物 」。1844至1846年，他同麥克開拉啟（Tomas McClatchie）作為海外傳道會最早來華的傳教士，一起受差派往華考察福傳前景。後在1847年出版的 A Narrative of an Exploratory Visit to each of the Consular Cities of China, and the Islands of Hong Kong and Chusan in Behalf of the Church Missionary Society in the Years 1844, 1845, 1846（1844、1845、1846年海外傳道會調查訪問中國各設領事館城市及香港和舟山羣島記事），又名《五口通商城市遊記》中內述詳情。21849年，獲神學博士學位。同年《英皇制誥》（Letters Patent）宣告維多利亞教區的成立，並任命施美夫為該教區第一任主教1 Gillian Bickley, “George Smith,” in Dictionary of Hong Kong Biography, eds.
